One thing is I find the way the woman in black originally died changing makes this version less effective, in the original book, she witnesses her son's death in the marshes and goes insane with grief after, after getting a 'wasting idsease' and dying later (in the Daniel Radcliffe film she hangs herself after seeing her son die), like, the fact son died with her son in the carriage in this version just makes it seem less like she would haunt the place, like the trauma of seeing her son die and anger than her beloved son was kept from her and taken away from her makes more sense to me.

I was 12 when this was broadcast and like many others I thought it was real. That made the ending super confusing as I was waiting for someone to tell the viewers that Parky and the others were ok but nothing happened and they just moved onto the next scheduled programme. I had gone to bed before the reassurance message was put out so I didn't see it or know anything about it. Even as a 12 year old I didn't understand the hate it got because although I found it spooky, it didn't scare me that much. If anything I was more intrigued as I loved things to do with ghosts and was really hoping for some conclusive evidence that they were real. I found the idea of it scaring someone into killing themseves to be utterly ridiculous and felt people were majorly overreacting. I didn't know at the time that the young man had learning difficulties and only found that out later when the DVD came out. I watched it again as an adult when it finally came out on DVD and found it to be incredibly tame and pretty badly acted. Seeing it through adult eyes I wondered how on earth anyone took this seriously in 1992 and, just like child me, still could not understand at all how 30'000 people got so upset about it.

Thank you so much for singling out the score of the utterly superb "How do You Plead", which is possibly my favourite episode (The Referee... coming second). It always amazes me that Christian Henson doesn't get nearly enough attention in the reviews - he's very much "the fifth Beatle" in this set-up, rethinking soundtracking from scratch with every episode just as Steve and Reece are with their genre experimentation. And as for "How do you Plead" itself - there simply are no words for how brilliant it is.

Totally agree about the utter magnificence of The Stakeout, not least because Reece in 'nice junior cop' mode is such an endearing and seductive character. It adds to what all the best horror stories have: pathos. And pathos on two counts, because not only is Steve's character, Tommo, being murdered by his dead best friend, whom he hadn't properly grieved but by whose death he had been (no pun intended) utterly consumed, but also because Shearsmith's character, Varney, seems to lose all access to his empathic side when the Demon in him takes over. It's two levels of loss. And it also left me wondering how Varney became a vampire, and what was lost to him in the process.

I was born in 83 in Kansas City. Age 3, I lived my life in Lawrence, Kansas City, and the surrounding areas. Watching this film and seeing every single location (in these two cities) up close and personal, from Rusty's IGA (now called the Merc), to Kansas Memorial Stadium (being demolished and rebuilt), and even the Basic Sciences building (at 19th and Iowa St.) that I would drive by often, It was a truly somber experience, trying to imagine slamming Hiroshima together with my own cities, and having to live in them during the fallout (considering survival) was treacherous. Amazingly, the Scriptures from Revelation (bad translation; they should've used KJV) seems very similar to what was depicted here, though what Is Written is MUCH more graphic (and True) than that...that even the enemy can bring fire from the sky (hmm....), and people will even cry out for death, but it never comes...yet, they will curse God and not Change Their Mind (the actual definition of repent) from unbelief to Belief in Him. This movie was chilling as a young child, and sometimes, being around those very areas shown in the film had me looking into the sky, wondering...."today? PLEASE not today!"

I had personally suffered a paralysis due to a disease called Guillain Barrè syndome, in about 24 hours I was unable to move any part of my body and even unable to breath, but still very conscious, I was still able to speak a little bit with a big effort. Doctors had to put me in coma and intubated. Before coma I remember asking to let me die if things started to go on for too long. During an entire week of coma I was having a nightmare where I was constantly in a condition similar to the one depicted in the movie, unable to move on my own, mistreated from the doctors and abandoned from all my dears, but at least still able to speak. My nightmares where horrible and actually realized the deepest fears that I even did not knew before, they appeared totally true to me. Even waking up and coming back to reality was really hard, it seemed like a continuation of the nightmare, as soon as I was woken up I felt my body responding and tried to escape, so nurse just bound my wrist and ankles to the bed (in real life) to keep me there. I regained contact with reality about one day after waking up talking with my parents. Lukily I was able to phisically recover very very fast, but a scar will always remain inside of my consciousness of what look like to face death in the last moments of your life, when you cant breathe before coma and of what looks like to live probably the worst kind of earthly hell of survival. Casually discovered this movie, watched this video to understand what is it about, would really like to watch the movie, but I am not sure if I can find the force to endure a whole movie like this. With technology development we need moral development, before modern times people could not survive for long in such conditions, I deeply believe that we need to undestand the instruments we use and distinguish between what can save your life to build a better life from what is going to keep you alive in hell. In a religious perspective to me it seems like the difference between using our tools to preserve a holy life created from God, from playing to be God forcing a human kind to survive in a miserable condition that nature would have just let die. Also absolutely a wonderful antiwar message!

That episode reminded me quite a bit of "The Paul Lynde Halloween Special", also from 1976 and featuring Margaret Hamilton reprising the role as the Wicked Witch of the West. The part with Margaret appearing as herself to represent the Witch disguising as a harmless old lady was also similar, with the Witch taking on the identity of Paul's elderly housekeeper Margaret. And, like this episode, it only aired once and never again, but that was because it was a primetime holiday variety special that quickly became dated.

I make films that people call "horror" because I want to make films about real things that happen in the world, and most real things aren't very nice." - Ruggero Deodato I used to be hated for saying this is the most necessary film ever made, lol. The title is so symbolical - humans cannibalizing themselves, the nature within themselves. 99% of all the chickens and pigs that have ever lived on this planet were born for the sole purpose of being killed the moment they reach maturity. When people get upset over an animal being killed on screen it just illustrates the cognitive dissonance that goes on in every omnivores mind. Yes they were killed for the sole purpose of being eaten, they just happened to point the camera at this. Families used to film in their farms killing of pigs on camera too. This is much deeper what is going on with regards to the reaction by people to this film. It points the finger at the wound existing within the fragmented psyche of humanity. This music theme of this film is so etheric because for me it has signaled the return back to our nature that has unified light and dark. It is by facing the darkness and savagery of ourselves and others that we can transmute and nautralize it into nothingness/the source of creation. Notice how many people have an issue with animals being killed. This film triggers this reaction to reveal how modern man has become disconnected from nature that they are willing to eat the animals but not them being killed for food, it is exactly the message this movie is conveying. People think Deodato the film director wanted to show how civilized people are more savage than cannibals, but his point was to show how disconnected the modern societies are from the savage nature, death and pain of life in general. This is why most people want to look away and not see the atrocities happening during war. There is a deep disconnect, and we can see it with regards to what happens to Palestinians for instance, two different worlds and yet the same planet, it is reflective of the huge gap in the power dynamics between rich and poor, between privileged and not privileged, etc. There is this line in this trailer that says it all which goes "Don't turn away, look at it, these are men, men like you!" That is what this movie is about, to face the darkness so we could transmute it and bring harmonious balance to this world. This music is thematic enough to portray a hidden paradise that was once lost and yet to be discovered, by demonstrating the TRUTH that only through pain and darkness we can return back to this garden of eden, because it is through the unifying of light and dark when we ascend in spirit.

Morbid Angel is an extreme metal band who wrote a song called “Piles of Little Arms”, based on Colonel Kurtz tale of inoculating the children just to see them dismembered later. I find it a lyrically intelligent song told from the point of view of the men who cut children’s arms off. Death Metal may not be your musical taste, but it’s worth a listen and read if you’re a fan of Apocalypse Now. Another fantastic metal song based on the movie is “Heart of Darkness” by Iron Maiden. Featuring lyrics that are taken right from the film, “Heart of Darkness” is told from Captain Willard’s point of view, and is a dark, brooding metal song recorded while Blaze Bayley was singer of Iron Maiden.
